Velvet is a musical piece I composed and recorded last year. It’s an up-tempo jazz-adjacent brass and rhythm section piece that uses a mixture of legato brass samples from Spitfire Audio’s BBC:SO Discover orchestral sampler, as well as a number of other plugins. At some point I need to go back and re-record the saxes using some saxophone and brass sample libraries from the excellent PianoBook sampling community, that was founded and is strongly supported in an ongoing manner by Christian Henson from Spitfire Audio. I also now have an electric bass and guitar, which I will probably use to create live recordings of those instruments to replace the not-so-great free sample libraries used in the current version.
The piece was written as an exercise to practice brass writing. I’m very proud of the piece – I think it stands up to at least casual listening, and I like the vibe. The harmonic line is quite interesting too. The progression is quite distinctive and – while repetitive, it’s a quite original piece that represents my weird mashup of jazz, funk and blues influences.
In terms of commercial uses, it could sit quite nicely behind an ad for a trendy café or restaurant. It’s quite similar to themes I’ve heard used for similar purposes – especially in cinema advertising. I would definitely be open to licensing this piece for such purposes.
